Why can't I just spray my sports equipment with a sanitizer to kill the bacteria?

Padded equipment is thick and heavy, and bacteria live deep down within the foams and fabrics of shoulder pads, hockey pants, and other gear. Sprays only attack the surface of sports gear.

Why can't I just use bleach to kill the bacteria?

While the use of diluted bleach to a sanitizing level will kill the bacteria, bleach may also damage fabrics and the foam padding in protective equipment, thereby compromising the integrity of the equipment. Bleach can also damage and discolor plastics and leaves a sticky residue.
